Public Service Announcement
A public service announcement (PSA) or community service announcement (CSA) is a non-commercial advertisement broadcast on radio or television, ostensibly for the public interest. PSA's are intended to modify public attitudes by raising awareness about specific issues. The most common topics of PSA's are health and safety. A typical PSA is part of a public awareness campaign to inform or educate the public about an issue such as smoking or compulsive gambling. (wikipedia.com)
The Ad Council has been the leader in Successful PSA for 60 years. Their goal is to affect positive social change.
Some of their memorial campaigns include:
*"Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk"
*"A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste"
*"Take a Bite Out of Crime"
*"You Could Learn A lot from a Dummy"
The purpose of a PSA is to create change. They need quantitative results to measure effectiveness. The Ad Councils Safety belt campaign caused seat belt usage to go up from 14% to 79% since 1985 - saving an est. 85,000 lives, and $3.2 billion in costs to society." (source www.adcouncil.org)
LCCC SIFE's Piracy PSA
In 2008, LCCC SIFE students produced their own PSA against piracy to enter into the Motion Picture Association Ant-piracy Contest. We filmed the commercial at LCCC with student actors. Even through we lost the MPAA contest, we had a great time being actors, writers, producers for a day. Our PSA has impacted more then 1,000 people and in a follow up survey 22% stated that the campaign changed their opinion about watching pirated movies.
We would like to produce a second commercial for the fall 2009/10 contest. If you are interested in being a part of the next production for 2010 please e-mail us a lcccsifeteam@gmail.com
