ECBI Mission Statement

Mission Statement and Summary

The Elyria Comic Book Initiative is a literacy program designed to promote literacy and life long learning through comic books.

The initiative is a 3-pronged approach for developing the multigenerational enthusiasm of reading, writing, creating and artistic expression.

Phase one promotes literacy in conjunction with the Elyria Public Library System and other literacy advocates. It works to expand and enhance the overall selections of graphic novels and trade paperbacks within the footprint. Simultaneously, it unites comic book readers and enthusiasts as a cohesive community network and measures readership amongst the populace.

Phase two focuses on student engagement. Through a visual learning platform, students engage in the creation of comic books centered around pre-selected themes from social consciousness, leaqdership, conflict resolution and personal development; not to mention creative expression.

Phase three deals with site planning and selection for a future community resource called the Elyria Comic Book Academy. This resource will provide multigenerational participants an environment for collaboration and equipment to create their own comic books, comic strips, online comics and/or story boards used in video and video game development.
